Marcellus Portfolio Updates & Insights – October 2026

Published on Oct 15, 2026 · 3 Min Read

From Our CIO’s Desk

The Rebuilding of Indian Consumption.
As the traditional drivers of mass Indian consumption stall, our core strategy—the Consistent Compounders Portfolio (CCP)—has rewired its allocations toward high-quality pricing-power franchises, private healthcare providers, and manufacturing exporters. Rather than chasing entry-level consumer volume growth, our investment process focuses on resilient, well-managed businesses positioned around the new structural pillars of Indian consumption. As these macroeconomic shifts accelerate, we believe CCP’s strategic repositioning creates strong potential for sustained relative outperformance.
Saurabh Mukherjea
Founder & CIO

Why Has the Engine of Mass Consumption Stalled?

For two decades, Indian consumption followed a simple trajectory: an expanding middle class continuously bought packaged goods, two-wheelers, and entry-level durables. That engine has now stalled. FMCG volume growth collapsed from 11% in FY11 to 3% in FY26, while real wages for Nifty 50 employees contracted 4% annually since FY16. With white-collar hiring dropping (~20% post-generative AI) and essential living costs compounding at ~9% annually, traditional middle-class purchasing power is severely impaired.

What Are the Three New Pillars of Indian Consumption?

Private consumption accounts for ~60% of GDP, but its underlying drivers have rewired around three pillars:

  • The “New Elite” Owner-Operators: Top-end wealth is expanding rapidly, led by ~350,000 “octopus” families whose wealth grew 16-fold over 20 years. 54% of current Nifty 50 directors hold non-IIT/IIM domestic degrees. Real estate reflects this shift: homes priced above ₹1.5 crore now comprise 53% of new launches (up from 15% in Q1 2022).
  • A Credit-Funded Middle Class: Lacking real wage growth, middle-class spending is increasingly financed by debt. Non-housing household debt is among the world’s highest as a share of GDP, with ~40% of income spent on debt servicing. While vehicle credit (+18.8%) and gold loans (+88.1%) grow rapidly, unsecured credit for durables (+0.4%) and credit cards (+2.3%) has flatlined.
  • State Pivot to Cash Transfers & Private Services: Constrained by interest costs (38% of Centre’s revenue receipts), the state is stepping back from public service delivery, pivoting instead to direct cash transfers (₹1.7 lakh crore across 13 states in FY26). Households must now pay out-of-pocket for essential services like education (40% K-12 private share) and healthcare (52% private spend, 39.4% direct out-of-pocket).
What Does This Mean for Your Capital in the Long Run?

Since 1991, Indian market cycles have typically seen short, easy expansion phases followed by tougher compounding periods. In this environment, relying on mass FMCG growth is no longer sufficient. To build resilient long-term capital, Marcellus has rewired its portfolios across three distinct vectors:

  • Quality Compounders: Owning dominant, pricing-power franchises that compound earnings steadily despite broader wage headwinds.
  • Private Providers of Public Goods: High conviction in healthcare, hospitals, medical devices, and health insurance as households bear higher essential costs.
  • Manufacturing Exporters: Allocating to auto ancillaries, specialty engineering, textiles, and pharma exporters benefiting from rupee depreciation and new FTAs.

Multi Asset Portfolio

Rules based portfolio with a basket of different asset classes built on your financial goals providing risk-adjusted returns.

Portfolio Outlook
The strategy’s diversified positioning across five major asset classes chiefly, global equities, Cash, REITs, INVITs, Gold along with Indian equities, is expected to help investors navigate through period of heightened uncertainty going ahead.

What worked and what didn’t?

Slight overweight positioning in domestic equities and allocation to gold drove the relative underperformance during the month partially offset by cash allocation through arbitrage funds in the portfolio.

MeritorQ Portfolio

Rules based Multicap strategy investing in relatively undervalued quality companies.

Portfolio Outlook
Post portfolio rebalancing in September, the updated portfolio has 41 stocks with 5 entries and 4 stocks exiting the portfolio. Allocation to large caps increased slightly along with higher allocation in healthcare and industrial stocks.

Portfolio remains positioned to weather uncertainty and benefit from possible earnings upgrades, with defensive allocation to large caps balanced by meaningful allocation in good quality small and midcap companies.

What worked and what didn’t?

Relative to the benchmark, the strategy’s higher allocation to small cap and healthcare sector and underweight in financials and IT sectors helped. Though allocation to large and midcap stocks was a drag.

Global Compounders Portfolio

A gateway to investing in some of the best global companies from the Developed World.

Portfolio Outlook

Market leadership remained unusually narrow, with AI-related stocks and megacaps supporting the headline index while much of the broader market weakened. GCP’s lower exposure to these areas weighed on returns relative to the benchmark, although the portfolio held up better than the average stock.

Higher oil prices, rising bond yields and elevated bond-market volatility pressured most sectors, including traditional defensives. Meanwhile, ISM surveys, employment figures and lending conditions suggested a more resilient underlying economy. If sustained, this could make the recent weakness an attractive opportunity to invest in sound businesses. We remain selective, focusing on earnings durability, cash generation and valuation.

Meta’s launch of Muse highlighted how AI agents could reshape online shopping and consumer interactions with businesses. We are evaluating the opportunities and competitive implications for our holdings.

What worked and what didn’t?

Meta and our semiconductor exposure through SMH were the strongest contributors, supported by continued investor interest in AI.

GE Aerospace, HEICO and Safran continued to lag despite solid earnings reported in the preceding month. Uncertainty around oil prices and potential pressure on airline profitability appeared to weigh on sentiment. We continue to assess these concerns against the companies’ operating performance and longer-term prospects, remaining attentive to any evidence of a change in the underlying investment case.

Performance of the scheme (Figures in %)

Consistent Compounders Portfolio

Concentrated portfolio of heavily moated companies that can drive healthy earnings growth.

Portfolio Outlook

In an uncertain macroeconomic environment shaped by AI disruption and shifting global geopolitics, CCP has evolved significantly. While maintaining a concentrated portfolio focused on quality businesses, we have diversified our top holdings across uncorrelated sectors such as healthcare, auto components, and export-led manufacturing.

This deliberate shift away from our historical reliance on large-cap consumption, financials and IT services helps mitigate AI related risks to jobs and the domestic growth slowdown. Furthermore, the portfolio optimizes across higher earning growth and valuation re-rating potential. CCP remains a concentrated strategy with over 40% of the portfolio allocated to the top-5 positions. Total number of stocks currently in the portfolio is 21. Stock selection is still done basis the quality of the underlying businesses. Expected earnings growth over the next 3-5 years across all portfolio constituents is mid-teens or higher. In terms of forward valuation multiples, weighted average P/E multiple of the portfolio is around low-30s despite no exposure to IT services and a small exposure to lenders. Over the last five quarters, the portfolio constituents delivered acceleration in weighted average EPS growth from 10% YoY in Q1FY26 to 14% YoY in 2QFY26, 17% YoY in 3QFY26, 22% YoY in 4QFY26 and 23% in 1QFY27.

What worked and what didn’t?

CCP delivered a smart recovery in absolute as well as relative returns (>15% alpha vs the index in the last eight months). Over this period, while Divis, CarTrade and Dr. Lal Pathlabs have been the biggest performance-contributors, HDFC Bank and CMS have been the biggest detractors

Kings of Capital

Our financial sector focused investment strategy with a portfolio of NBFCs, wealth managers, rating agencies, banks, asset managers and other BFSI companies.

Portfolio Outlook

Pre quarter updates of banks and NBFCs validate our assessment of strong underlying business momentum in the financial sector. Our portfolio is well positioned to benefit from these tailwinds as we focus on niche lenders most of which are growing at 20%+.

Despite the recent rally during the financial year, valuations across several holdings remain attractive. Our portfolio delivered 25% earnings growth during the quarter ended June, 2026 but still trades at 18x P/E—near the lower end of its historical valuation range. Key risks to this view include a sharp slowdown in domestic economic activity or a rise in global interest rates.

What worked and what didn’t?

Over the last 12 months, top detractors in KCP were CMS Info Systems and HDFC Bank. The top contributors to the portfolio over the last 12 months have been City Union Bank and Nuvama Wealth.

Little Champs & Rising Giants

SMID-cap strategies that invests in companies with good corporate governance, capital allocation and competitive advantages.

Portfolio Outlook

With the 1QFY27 season now behind us, attention turns to the 2QFY27 results, which are yet to begin. The geopolitical backdrop remains unsettled — the Middle East conflict continues to simmer, keeping supply chains and raw material costs under watch — and we expect this to stay a swing factor for portfolio earnings in the near term.

Against this uncertainty, we continue to be cautious on valuation, preferring to let our cash buffer cushion any drawdowns and to deploy only where price and value line up. Over a longer horizon, we stay constructive on the export side of the portfolio: the recently concluded FTAs, a competitive rupee and India’s manufacturing competitiveness make a strong case for our exporters, which now account for roughly half the portfolio allocations. On balance, we think both the LCP and RGP portfolios are well-positioned to navigate the near-term noise while retaining meaningful upside as the export opportunity plays out.

What worked and what didn’t?

On the stock-wise attribution front, the best performers over the last three months were Pearl Global, Uniparts and Pricol, all of which rerated on the back of healthy 1QFY27 results. The main detractors were CMS Info Systems, Go Digit and Eris Lifesciences.
