Short read: The hybrid human-Neanderthal fossils that shocked scientists
Author: Ella Al-Shamahi
Source: BBC
For decades the pre-conceived notion was that homo sapiens and Neanderthals had NOT interbred. Then a groundbreaking discovery in Romania in 2002 changed that. It is worth watching this short video from the BBC to understand just how comprehensively our view of our own evolution changed in the wake of that discovery.
The remarkable Oase fossils in Romania provided genetic evidence that homo sapiens and Neanderthals “not only coexisted but also shared DNA”. The Oase fossils showed that the interbred species shared some features which were human (Eg. the homa sapiens’ chin) and some features which were neanderthal (Eg. huge molars almost 4x the size of human molars).
A decade later came another revolutionary breakthrough. Advances in genetic analysis allowed scientists to do DNA analysis and prove that these two species did interbreed to produce offspring thus shattering a century old consensus on this controversial subject.
